Hi, my name is Teresa
I am a Registered Nurse with more than 16 years experience. I have worked in surgery, preadmission clinic, medicine, nurse educator, and Bachelor of Science nursing instructor. I finished my Master of Nursing two years ago.
I enjoy volunteering in the community through organizations such as Scouts and my church. I have also volunteered as Children's Camp nurse numerous times.
I have been blessed to go on mission trips to Mexico and Ethiopia. My husband David and I went to Chihuahua, Mexico three times. We stayed with the local pastor on the last two trips. I have been attempting to learn Spanish. The pastor's family spoke very little English, which leads to some funny stories from our trip. I helped put in a ceiling in the local church. I also assisted with building a soup kitchen in a poverty stricken area in the city. I cooked for and fed the children and saw the program expand greatly. The children and people I met in Chihuahua hold a special place in my heart.
I have volunteered with Hope International Development Agency for three years. I have helped fundraise for various projects. My husband, David and I have traveled to Ethiopia, Africa twice with Hope International. We were able to visit several spring capping water systems in southern Ethiopia. It was interesting to see the difference clean accessible water made not just to health but to all aspects of daily life. The people in the remote villages in the Derashe region have a completely different life than we have here in Canada. However once they have clean water they have a good life.
David and I also traveled around in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa. The level of poverty in Addis Ababa was heart wrenching. We viewed a library program; an AIDS orphan program; and a centre for HIV prevention, testing, and counselling. The library facility was always packed with youth who were hoping they could get an education as a way out of poverty. If teenagers can achieve high enough marks in high school, the government will pay for college or university. However many school libraries have little or no books. We visited a school ‘library’ that was basically just a large empty room without a single book.
The needs of people in poverty around the world are staggering. We can all show God's love for people in practical ways. I believe if we all do our part we can make the world a better place for everyone.
Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said: With man this is impossible but not with God: all things are possible with God.
