Speakers are booked for 7 - 9 pm on May 25 at the Mission Heights Community Church. The topics include the Black Forest Academy and Carribean's Children's project. Teresa will give a presentation regarding DavTee Society and show a video clip about the Cambodia water wells.

Hope to see you there!

Summer 2008

Some Families in Prey Omal Village:

Suy Mom, and 4 children
They used to cut wood in the forest, worked their rice field, and climbed palm trees for coconuts for business-people. The children could not go to school, the whole family was needed to work. They got their drinking water from the Pursat river, borrowing a cart or bicycle to carry it

Today, because of the well, they have a new home, and 2 daughters are able to go to school, as the family sells vegetables & fruit almost every day. (lufa, gourd, water convolvulus, green onions, cabbage, chilis, banana, papaya coconut) They have also bought some chickens to raise.

Widow Hing Kim & 7 children
She was planting rice for others in return for rice to eat. Her oldest son worked at making palm sugar for a neighbour. One grand-child died of typhoid as she had no money to pay hospital or a private nurse. They got their drinking water from the Pursat river.

Today they have clean water, vegetables, are able to send 2 sons to school, bought wood to fix the house, and are able to save some money. They grow Chilis, mint leaves, lemon gras, water convolvulus, gourd, Coconut, custard apple, banana, papaya and mangos.

Bora and Chenda, & 5 children
This family used to cut wood and dig bamboo shoots to survive. The children collected shells and carried water from a hand-dug open well a distance from their home.

Since they dug the new well, they can grow vegetables all year (5 crops), bought a pig to raise, and with the income so far, 2 sons and one daughter are able to attend school. They are growing Pumpkin, string beans, angle lufa, chillis, cucumber, white cabbage, and several types of tree; - coconut, custard apple, banana, papaya, and jack-fruit.

Bun Khorn, and 5 children

Bun used to clear land for other farmers and plant rice for a neighbour. The children cannot go to school as 2 are to old and 3 are too young. They used to get their water from the Pursat river.

After digging the well, Bun was able to buy 2 pigs, and then trade them for a cow, as the neighbour saw that they can provide water for the animal. Bun now produces cucumber, gourds, chillis, water convolvulus, amaranth, taro, and has 2 types of tree; mango and jack.

Nen Yein & 9 children
Nen and the children never had enough to eat because of having to provide for so many. Nen used to sell wood for cooking, and collect shells in the Pursat river to survive. They also obtained water from the dirty Pursat river.   Today, Nen is able to send 4 of her children to school, and bought 3 pigs to raise. She grows Cabbages, egg plant, pumpkin, chillis, lemon grass spice, papaya and banana.

Meas Chhrun (father) & Hon Noen (mother)  (King visit in Feb. 2008)
This family has 8 children; 3 married daughters, 2 small children stay at home, and 3 go to school. They have installed a pump next to their well for irrigation purposes. The pump is possibly faster than hauling water up with a rope and bucket. They are now able to grow a great variety of vegetables, spices, fruit, and poultry.

Meas Chhrun & Hon Noen’s dreams now include deepening their pond for some fish, getting more chickens, and some pigs. The chief gave them some land, and they will buy more. The children will continue at school unless they have difficulty. They will build a new house in the next 3 years.
