UPDATE:
DavTee Society has partnered with the Swan City Rotary Club and ANSO Collectives & Education Support Society (ANSO Society) to send books and supplies to Southern Ethiopia.Between us there have been enough books collected to fill a cannister. The cannister will be packed up & the paperwork process started. Once the paperwork has cleared the cannister will be shipped to a region in Southern Ethiopia. We are hoping to ship the cannister in the spring.

Donations of books will still be  received in order to start filling another cannister. Donations are still being accepted for supplies to be purchased in Ethiopia by ANSO Society These supplies would assist the schools & the health centre in the area.

The Big Book Box was moved to the Prairie Mall parking lot and was parked there over the summer months. Books were collected throughout the spring and summer. A book drive was held in the Center Court of the Prairie Mall September 13 & 14. Volunteers from the Swan City Rotary and ANSO Society manned the display table and collected books throughout the event. We had a great response with many interested people and numerous books donated. Funds were also raised to purchase supplies in Ethiopia.

When we (David and Teresa) were in Ethiopia we were able to view some schools and talk to local people about the educational system. People in Ethiopia realize that education can be a way for young people to get out of poverty. The educational system in Ethiopia is taught in English. The government will sponsor college or university if a student is able to maintain excellent marks in high school. However learning can be difficult because of the scarcity of educational materials. Most classrooms in Ethiopia have only a few books that are shared among all students. We visited a ‘school library’ that was basically just a big empty room without books, school supplies, tables, or chairs.

Then we visited a library run by a local charity that was filled with young people studying on their own. We talked to Abay & Dawid (yes that's the correct spelling, just say it like it looks). They told us they walk 6 kms in order to use the library. It has been worth it because they have been able to advance through high school and will go to university next year. They have friends who failed their exams because they did not have access to books. There is a desperate need for more educational materials.

DavTee Society is partnering with the City of Grande Prairie to bring educational materials to Ethiopia.

Cat Rentals has donated a 40 foot canister to DavTee Society. We have been collecting textbooks and school supplies to send to Ethiopia in the fall. We will have bins set up in City Hall and participating businesses to collect school supplies and old textbooks. Keep posted to see where to drop off books &/or school supplies.

The Big Book Box canister will be visible around town soon.
